Old Time Radio drama from NBC Radio aired August 29, 1948. More than a story of a year, this radio drama was a metaphor for the end of congressional reconstruction of the South and the imposition of socially repressive controls over Blacks that would last a century. Here Durham dramatized the life of Charles Caldwell (1831-1875), a Black state senator in Mississippi following the Civil War—using Caldwell's assassination in late 1875 as symbolic of the lot of emancipated Blacks and their white supporters.
